Cat Rescue
Jan 8 2024
The cat in the tree
gazed down
at all the faces turned up.
It's hard to read the face of a cat,
especially for dog-people like me.
Impassive?
Serene?
Alarmed?
Perhaps there's a message
in the sharply flicking tail,
the cold eyes
with their regally slow blink,
the fur
which bristles along its back
or stays flat,
but either way
was too high up to see.
Was it stuck?
Too far to jump?
Found out too late
it's easier climbing up
than to pick its way down?
Or simply doing what cats do,
taking its own sweet time
according to inscrutable feline logic,
hardly in a rush
and amused by all the fuss.
The fire department was called.
Meanwhile, the cat stretched out
in the crook of a branch
mewling contentedly,
resting its head
on crossed front paws
eyes drifting shut.
