In The Future . . .
Sept 5 2022
. . . cars will drive themselves.
But will they go anywhere better?
Will they still stall in winter?
Will the kids in the back seat
pout and squabble and whine
and get just as car sick?
We all laugh, looking back
at predictions of the past,
how wrong they were.
So I'm loath to predict anything.
Communal pods?
Hyper loops?
Jet packs?
Trouble is
it sounds too much like sitting
restless and passive
in rush hour traffic
on a city bus,
travelling its preset route.
Or depend on connection
to some blackbox AI
somewhere up in the cloud.
And most of all
I love driving.
So will I be
the last of my kind?
Like the last cowboy
in dusty leather chaps
riding into the sunset
on the vast Western plain,
tugging expertly on the reins
of his sleek and spirited horse?
A small tear
rolling down his cheek,
because dust gets in your eye
out on the range.
