A Simple Refresh
Dec 4 2022
To want celebrity
and get what you wish for
must be deeply disillusioning.
Because celebrity
— like fair weather
fast fashion
and youthful attraction —
doesn't last.
For a single day
perhaps a good week
you're the hot topic, in all the feeds.
But also as quickly forgotten
in an age of endless distraction
and short attention spans.
Which means the rest of your life
is all downhill,
wistfully thinking back
to your moment of triumph.
Not to mention the fine line
between celebrity
and notoriety.
. . . Although perhaps not
when all you want
is to be known.
And then private people like me,
who lead small lives
of quiet anonymity.
Who is content
to sit in a dark room
and write poetry
no one will read.
Who is amused
by notions of posterity.
By the empty vessel of fame
and the hollowness of glamour.
By the shallow image
they have of you,
and how it will only leave you feeling
unfulfilled.
By how little it takes
to become a sensation,
who then so quickly fades
with a simple refresh.
