Infidelity

The husband
of the unfaithful wife
wants to know,
did the marriage wrecker
have sex with her?
No doubt she must have,
but he'd still rather hear her deny it.
And the wife asks the philanderer
if the hussy and he
were ever in love.
Unfaithfulness is one thing,
losing your heart another.
Neither asks
why they weren't enough,
what they did wrong
or didn't do at all.
The aggrieved party, after all;
the one who's not at fault
has nothing to answer for.
So you either grow old together
or grow apart.
Or meet someone
who makes you feel younger
and take the plunge.
Because you need to be heard, valued
desired.
Because you feel like an adolescent again,
confused and overwhelmed.
Because the delirium
of lust, sex, and love
has addled your judgement
and juiced your hunger for more.
The one who betrayed their vows,
and the one who occupies
the moral high ground.
Or is it more muddled
than the selfish lover
and the one who was wronged?
Is it the happy couple
who failed;
despite trying so hard
to absolve themselves?
