Heat Warning

A red banner
above the weather report
declares “heat warning”
in eye-catching text.
It contains well-meant advice
like shade
hydration
rest.
As if we were helpless innocents.
As if we needed to be told
to come in out of the rain.
The dogs, though, are old souls
and need no such scolding.
Sensible creatures
they sprawl in the shade.
Kamikaze into the lake
and wallow contentedly.
Dig nests, and shelter there,
clawing manically
into the soil
down to wet cooler depths.
September,
and no such thing
as too much heat.
