Bad News

The news is not good.
Are?
Dismal politics
climate teetering
home team lost.
But the editors
have taken mercy,
and there is a ray of light
on the front page
about seeing-eye dogs.
Human interest, they call this.
Which I take to mean
of interest
to human beings,
or at least regular people;
while presumably, the serious news
is only appealing
to extra-terrestrials
and automatons.
Which suits me fine;
I love the fluffy stuff,
the soft news
that tugs at your heart.
And anyway, what's wrong with denial?
Nothing I can do
about the state of the world
so why agonize?
These days, I just want good news,
even if it's old
a little saccharine
or more of the same.
Give me weather reports
with nothing much to say
beyond sunny and warm,
honest politicians,
the winning games.
More noble dogs,
less disaster porn.
