Artificial Light
Feb 26 2023
Artificial light.
As if photons
weren't all the same.
As if light had to cross space
to be authentic,
full spectrum or not.
The bulb that's been on
without burning out
since 1901.
The stark fluorescents
that flicker and buzz.
The harsh blue light
of semiconductors.
Light
that abolished night
and sabotaged sleep.
The light
that turned the world monochrome.
The light
that slammed shut the window
on starry skies.
So we no longer look up.
Feel that only we
inhabit the universe.
Too afraid of the dark
to stray
very far from it.
