Come Hell or High Water

Not much to choose
between hell and high water.
As if there's nothing good to come,
so prepare
to burn or drown.
Or practice virtue
and learn to swim.
Or altogether reject
notions of an afterlife.
Refuse to go under,
and stake out the high ground
watching the water rise.
But despite how it sounds
come hell or high water
is not for pessimists.
It's a cry
the bold and self-assured
rally around.
As if to say
nothing can defeat me
so bring it on.
As if to say
forget the devil, or tidal surge
Biblical floods
and underworlds.
Because whatever comes
I'll persevere.
