The odd couples
who make you wonder
what they see in each other.
Why they're together,
how they ever met.
Is it the attraction of opposites;
the way puzzle pieces fit,
one zigging
while the other zags?
That they see aspects of the other
the rest of us can't?
Or is it inertia;
because we get so used to things
they begin to seem immutable?
Or could I have gotten this wrong?
That searching for the opposite sex
version of yourself
is no formula for lasting love.
You want the friction
of the dreamer and the pragmatist —
the art history major
and used car salesman,
earnest believer
and narrow-eyed skeptic,
homebody
and gung-ho adventurer.
From friction
. . . to sparks
. . . to fire.
But how they ever met
is still a mystery.
How differently
they remember it.
How, as usual, the truth
lies somewhere in between.
