Alternating Current

She's an absolute dynamo.
Electric.
Giving off sparks.
A powerhouse
who lights everyone up.
And, like Niagara Falls,
slipping into her undertow
risks a rocky plunge
and running out of air.
These are the dangers
of charismatic people,
they're like a floodwater current
too strong to resist.
But oh, we want to be with her,
basking in her gaze
carried in her wake.
Taking care
against the unprotected surges
and sudden outages.
Because her alternating current
whipsaws to extremes,
from brilliant light
to overload;
breakers flipping
wires sizzling
a whiff of acrid smoke.
When her strong magnetic field
diametrically shifts
and the poles are reversed.
How we miss her then,
stumbling through the dark
blind to the precipice
above the raging gorge.
