Glasses and a Beard
May 15 2022
It's been established
that glasses and a beard
make a man look competent.
Add a white lab coat
a few grey hairs
and the air of authority
is absolute;
perhaps distracted, a little nerdy
but undoubtedly smart.
How age becomes a man,
a captain of industry
a silver fox
a man of means.
How odd, how culture shifts.
In the old days, only beatniks sported beards,
neat goatees
exotic fu manchus.
Suspicious drifters
passing through town,
foreigners
with heavy accents
who smelled of spicy food.
And traditional glasses
with their thick black frames
hardly flattered anyone.
What's next, I wonder.
Cowboy boots
green hair
neck tattoos?
The relentless whimsy of fashion
I wouldn't dare predict.
And don't much care;
because I am oblivious
anachronistic
fixed in my tastes.
No silver fox
or captain of industry;
the beard is mere laziness
the glasses help me see.
