Tidying Up
Feb 5 2023
“My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life.”
— Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Saving Magic of Tidying Up
The made bed
made each day.
The patina of dust
that simply appears
and is always there,
like the background radiation
from the beginning of the universe.
The dogs
tracking in dirt, no matter what,
vacuumed up
time after time
only to return.
Dishes, cycling between
dirty and clean
like a perpetual motion machine;
but still, the sink
never fully emptied out.
Forget about
the Legos scattered like land mines,
sticky floors
abandoned clothes.
The futility
of tidying up
can feel like treading water,
like one step forward
one step back.
Or leave the bed
as you left it,
because it just gets messy again.
And if dust
will always be with us
surrender graciously.
After all, isn't something from nothing
kind of a miracle?
Let yourself
slip slowly under,
only coming up for air
when you feel the burn.
And if you're never getting ahead,
what's the difference
between staying in place
and losing ground?
Just be sure
to cultivate your blind spots
pull down the shades.
