“Straight Lines to Infinity that Never Intersect”
Feb 9 2023
In a parallel universe
things start the same
and turn out differently.
While down here on earth
it's the reverse,
rarely agreeing about the past
but finding ourselves together
in the here and now.
A point of convergence
that for a brief moment, at least
has the weight of reality.
That is, until the moment has passed
and it becomes history,
at least as we remember it;
forgetting
reinventing
and embellishing
as a good story-teller does;
no two versions
alike.
And the future, of course
is even more uncertain.
So why not “a” instead of “the”?
Why the singular
when there are multitudes
of possibility?
“A” future,
that may — or may not — come true.
So if you disagree.
If you feel alone.
If the possibilities
overwhelm you,
you aren't the only one
living with uncertainty
in your own parallel universe.
We all inhabit one,
occasionally intersecting
but most often diverging
from everyone else.
Marooned
in an ever-succeeding present
all by ourselves.
