Skookum and Rufus
June 23 2022
The fancy dogs
at the prestigious dog show
are pampered, groomed, compliant.
Mine are not.
Here, it's tough love
and rough-house play,
with kibble for dinner
mud to roll in
a lake to explore.
My instructions
are routinely ignored;
apparently
taken more as suggestions
than incontestable orders.
They have no time
to strut around a ring
on the end of a leash
all fluff-dried and beautifully brushed
only to be judged.
No, they are scruffy dogs
with character.
Cuddly dogs,
despite the shedding hair
and iffy hygiene.
Fun dogs,
who won't be winning any prizes
or even make the cut,
but are healthy and happy
and make everybody smile
and are unstinting with their love.
Sometimes, all I want is a self-indulgent trifle.
I was looking at some pics from Westminster, and thought that's sure not for us!!
