Quicksilver - June 19 2022

Quicksilver

June 19 2022

Mercury, the messenger god,

who also rules

over luck, trickery, thieves.

The confidante of kings,

shuttling between

heaven and earth.

Was he, too, as temperamental

as this unsettled weather?

Warm sun,

giving way

to wind-driven clouds

cool overcast.

Cold rain, slanting down

then a clear summer sky,

delicate wisps of steam

rising from the ground.

I, too, have been described as mercurial.

Moody

temperamental

hard to predict,

whipsawing

from open to suspicious

generous to mean.

One gets more stable with age;

but still

emotion is hard to repress

self-regulation eludes.

The ocean of air

and the turbulent seas

are a study in chaos;

no forecast

can be relied upon.

And how will I feel

in an hour's time

a day from now?

The meteorologists

are hard at work

modelling my history.

They use technical terms

like vortex, occluded front

heat flux, and downburst,

emotionally immature.

Today, they're calling for a mix

of sun and cloud

no chance of rain.

While I would say

bring an umbrella

just in case!
