Helios, Sol, Apollo,
and the Sun God Ra
Dec 11 2024
It’s all sun.
The living planet.
Life.
Us.
Photosynthesis,
the power of wind,
the light of day.
Even coal, oil, gas;
prehistoric sun
gathered and stored
in strong chemical bonds;
concentrated energy
free to burn.
But also death.
Ultraviolet
cosmic rays
solar storms.
The supernova
that when time ends
will swallow earth whole.
But still, I turn to face
the spring sun's warmth,
feel the summer heat
soak into my skin
suffuse my bones,
and watch the autumn leaves glow
with the pellucid light
of a clear fall day.
It's a fusion reactor
furiously churning
at 15 million degrees,
and a lop-sided orb
smiling down
in yellow crayon
from a kindergarten wall.
The sun,
indifferent to us
as well as ours.
A middling star
in a spiral arm
on the outskirts of the galaxy.
