Learning to Listen
March 3 2024
I tried to let the silence dwell.
Let the long pause
go unfilled,
give her words
the thought they deserve.
But rather than hear her out
more words rush in
before I can stop myself;
so instead of bridging the space between us
they widen it.
Who first said
that nature abhors a vacuum?
It's true, of course
but why such vehemence?
Is nature so full of disgust
a vacuum so abhorrent?
But true to form, words rush in.
Words I can't retract,
or, once said
can't be unheard.
That while plastering over the awkward pause
leave an even more awkward wall
looming between us.
