Flat Earthers and Millenarians

March 13 2024

They're still certain

the earth is flat,

the moon landing was staged,

that true believers

will be wafted up to heaven

when the end times come.

There is no dissuading them.

They enjoy the status

of free thinker

knowing better

being contrarian.

But are essentially conformists

who crave belonging,

initiates

in a select group

possessed of privileged knowledge.

The hypocrisy

of free thinkers who all think the same

never crosses their minds.

Then those who believe nothing at all.

Not just skeptics, but cynics

who think nothing is absolute,

nothing can be proven,

and there’s no point either way.

So it’s either nihilist

or deluded.

And those of us in neither camp,

whom they either scorn

or ignore.

The sensible middle.

The ones who live in reality.

The ones who are firmly grounded.

Who will remain earthbound

when Judgement Day comes,

going to work

raising kids

and paying taxes

as we’ve always done.

Content

to leave the metaphysics

to the experts,

who bother themselves

with things like that.

And really, the earth looks flat, so does truth even matter?

Notwithstanding

GPS

orbital physics

and what’s been plainly visible

for thousands of years;

the masts of ships

getting shorter and shorter

until the horizon swallows them up.
