Don’t Know
April 14 2024
I’ve always told agnostics
to pick a lane.
Have never checked the box
no opinion,
indifferent,
could go either way.
And would never think of saying
don’t know;
ignorance may be bliss
but it’s also embarrassing.
So even with anonymity
guaranteed
I bluster and confabulate.
Because an opinion is expected
on everything
these days;
no nuance
or shades of grey,
no ifs, ands, or buts.
And anyway
aren’t we all mostly faking it
most of the time?
The illusion of explanatory depth
afflicts everyone.
Try to explain
in real time
how a toilet works
a zipper zips
and you’ll understand
how little you know
how much you’ve presumed,
the urge
to fake your way through it.
The candidate
brave enough to say
don’t know
gets my vote.
Ignorance may not be bliss
but it is human,
and the humility to admit it
a sign of good character
and strength of mind.
