Midwinter Thaw

The midwinter thaw
is upon us once more.
Still below freezing
and our well-seasoned bodies
are out in T-shirts and shorts
oblivious to cold.
The season of purity.
Of sanitized soil
and virgin snow.
Of bodies that glow
in its bracing cold
with vitality and health,
all the decadence and sloth
of the indolent south
and hot humid tropics
scoured cleanly away.
Flushed bodies and beating hearts
out in the January thaw,
counting down
to the next arctic front, polar vortex
high pressure storm.
A bitter north wind
and winter once more.
