The Problem of Beauty
Sept 15 2025
The problem of beauty
is different for the beautiful.
For the rest of us
it’s envy
intimidation
even schadenfreude.
It’s desire
that won’t be satisfied.
But I suppose it’s a burden
having to prove yourself
more than a pretty face.
And always questioning your suitors
— is the attraction superficial
or more than skin deep?
And age must weigh more heavily
on those blessed by birth;
wondering who you’ve become
after it’s lost,
consumed by past glories.
So how fortunate to be average
as I undoubtedly am.
Not pursued
or duelled over.
No leers
from randy passers-by,
no need
to be aghast at every wrinkle,
preen before the mirror,
contend with bad hair
when the benchmark is perfection.
And now, I turn my thoughts to the rich.
Contemplate
the burden of money
and dead weight of trust funds
on the unfortunate upper crust.
And the the suffering
of the rich and beautiful
I fear
must be too much to bear.
