Rebuilding
Oct 6 2024
The rebuilding is going well.
Or at least as well as expected.
The usual setbacks, of course.
Mostly the shortages.
The unavoidable delays.
The demoralizing effect
of fire/flood/lightning strike,
bankruptcy or landslide,
sudden death.
Take your pick.
After all, if it isn't one thing
it's another.
So why did I imagine
through all those wasted years
some sunlit upland
where serenity reigns?
An end
to life’s sturm und drang,
the relentless churn of events?
Turns out, we never stop rebuilding.
New cities rise
on the rubble of the old.
Marriages fail
new vows are said.
We contend with sudden death,
then give thanks for mercy;
that she was spared
from all that suffering.
Who knows what’s next?
Except that there will be something
and then something more.
And in the aftermath
there will be no alternative
but to bootstrap ourselves. once again
into action
and out of despair.
