Mongrel Seeds
May 5 2024
You prepare the soil,
plant, weed, grow.
But before that
select a site with sun
but not too much,
erect a fence
to keep the deer from plundering,
pick seeds
that in their hard impervious husks
contain both mystery, and promise.
Mystery, because each is unique;
mongrel seeds
miscegenation.
And promise,
because you may never live
to see the harvest.
But plant, anyway
and tend to your plot
however modest.
This is faith of a different order
than Sunday service,
belief in a higher power,
obeisance to God.
It’s faith that things will grow
with you or without,
given light and water
and the fullness of time.
Even an atheist
plants tomatoes, carrots, kale.
Sometimes prays for rain
despite herself.
